Emmy Montemurro-Baxter MSEd., RP, RMFT, Acc OAFM

I am a Registered Psychotherapist, a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist, an Accredited Family Mediator, and I hold a certificate in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.  I have worked in the field of counselling and therapy since 1992.

I work with adults, adolescents and children regarding individual concerns, couple and family relationships. Together with clients, through dialogue we explore situations and find opportunities for growth regarding various issues including but not limited to interpersonal and couple relationships, separation, divorce, family blending, parenting and co-parenting concerns, grieving losses, work relationships and sexual orientation.  I also work with individuals and their significant others regarding issues related to various anxieties, depression, etc. I embrace diversity and am committed to human rights.

My approach in therapy is client centred. Although I focus on the client(s) in the session, I keep in mind that every person is part of several larger systems. I maintain an ongoing awareness of systemic influences, and of power dynamics in relationships. I work together with clients toward their goals.  I incorporate elements from a variety of models of therapy including: Humanistic, Solution Focused, Narrative and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.  I tailor my approach to the client’s needs and in accordance with the issues with which they are presenting.  I am committed to being neutral and judgement free.

I join with clients in exploration of the self and the situation.  I believe that personal growth and self-acceptance are equally important in achieving personal satisfaction and in establishing healthy relationships.

In life, we are presented with several challenges.  One can simply feel overwhelmed by them and react or one can decide how to respond to each of life’s challenges. Responding with intention can enhance one’s personal growth and sense of wellbeing and can allow one to experience positive growth in their relationships.
